What is Samsung Smart Switch and how to transfer your old mobile data to new Samsung Galaxy?
If you have a Samsung mobile of the latest version you will find that Samsung provides a facility called the smart switch. Smart Switch makes it easy to transfer contacts, photos, messages and more from your old phone to your new Samsung Galaxy device. This means you are switching from any Android mobiles, Blackberry, Windows Mobile or iOS to Samsung Galaxy all your data of the old phone to your Samsung mobile.
How to use Samsung Smart Switch?
First select the operating system of your current you are transferring from the compatible options be it iOS, Android or Windows.
For iPhone transfer
If you own iPhone and want to get your data on Samsung mobile then select your preferred method of transferring your files. Either by cable, iCloud transfer or computer transfer.
If you use cable then to transfer content from iPhone to Galaxy smartphone you will need:
- Your old iPhone and its USB cable.
- Your new Galaxy smartphone and its USB connector.
Then on your new Galaxy smartphone log into your Gmail account.
Remember both old phone and new mobile should have full battery and your new Galaxy smartphone should have the latest version of Smart Switch
- Now Disable iMessage on your old iPhone and untick ‘Encrypt iPhone backup’ in iTunes on the computer.
- Connect the iOS device and Galaxy device using your old USB cable and the USB connector.
- Select Smart Switch app on new Galaxy phone.
- Tap ‘Trust’ on the iPhone.
- Select Smart Switch app on new Galaxy phone.
- If your data on the iPhone is encrypted, enter the password set in iTunes for encrypted backup.
- Select content items you wish to transfer over, then tap ‘TRANSFER’.
- Wait for the content items to transfer.
If you chose iCloud transfer to transfer your iOS content and settings from iCloud
- Initiate a backup to iCloud just before transfer to ensure all content has been backed up.
- Select Smart Switch on your Galaxy smartphone.
- Select the ‘WIRELESS’ method of transfer from the menu.
- Select the ‘RECEIVE’ method of transfer from the menu.
- Select ‘iPhone/iPad(import from iCloud)’ device type from the menu.
- Enter your AppleID user name and password to access your iCloud data for transfer.
- Select the basic content items you would like to transfer and tap ‘IMPORT’ at the bottom of your Galaxy smartphone screen.
- Select the personal content items you would like to transfer and tap ‘IMPORT’ at the bottom of your Galaxy smartphone screen.
- Once the personal content items transfer has been completed, a review screen will be presented with a summary of all content transferred.
- Tap ‘CLOSE APP’ at the bottom of the app page.
If you use computer method to transfer content to your Galaxy smartphone via PC/MAC
Pick your Galaxy smartphone and USB cable.
Make sure to have the latest version of Smart Switch software installed on the computer.
Now Backup your Galaxy smartphone to your computer
- Open ‘Smart Switch’ on your computer, if need be you can download and install latest version of Smart Switch
- Connect your Galaxy smartphone to your computer with its USB cable.
- Tap ‘ALLOW’ on your Galaxy smartphone.
- Click ‘More’ on Smart Switch screen on the computer.
- Click ‘Preferences’.
- Select ‘Encrypt backup data’ and click ‘OK’.
- Click ‘CONFIRM’.
- Click ‘Backup’, create a PIN to encrypt your data.
- Wait for your Galaxy smartphone to backup.
For Android Transfer
If you own an Android phone and now wish to transfer your data to Samsung galaxy then select your preferred method of transferring your files like Cable Transfer, Wireless Transfer, or Computer Transfer.
If you use USB cable to transfer data from Android smartphone to Galaxy smartphone you will need:
- Your old compatible Android smartphone and its USB cable.
- Your new Galaxy smartphone and its USB connector.
Your new Galaxy smartphone should be logged into a Gmail account.
Also both old mobile and new Samsung mobile should have full charged battery.
Remember to get latest version of Smart Switch on the new Galaxy smartphone and the old compatible Android smartphone.
- Now connect the compatible Android smartphone and the Galaxy smartphone using your old USB cable and the USB connector.
- Select Smart Switch app on new Galaxy smartphone.
- Select ‘USB CABLE’ method of transfer from the menu.
- Select ‘RECEIVE’ and wait as your device data is read.
- Tap ‘ALLOW’ on the old compatible Android smartphone.
- If prompted, update the Smart Switch app on your Android smartphone.
- New Galaxy smartphone will automatically search for content items.
- Select content items you wish to transfer over, then tap ‘TRANSFER’.
- Wait for the content items to transfer.
- On the Galaxy smartphone, tap ‘CLOSE APP’ at the bottom of the app page.
If you transfer data from Android smartphone to Galaxy smartphone wirelessly
- Select Smart Switch on the old compatible Android smartphone and Galaxy smartphone.
- On your Android phone, select ‘WIRELESS’ and tap ‘SEND’.
- On your Galaxy phone, select ‘WIRELESS’ and tap ‘RECEIVE’.
- On your Android phone, select the content items you wish to send, then tap ‘SEND’.
- Wait for the content items to transfer.
- On the Galaxy smartphone, tap ‘CLOSE APP’ at the bottom of the app page.
If you transfer data to your Galaxy smartphone via PC/MAC
- First Backup your Galaxy smartphone to your computer
- Then pick your Galaxy smartphone and USB cable.
- Note that you need latest version of Smart Switch software installed on the computer.
- Open ‘Smart Switch’ on your computer, if need be you can download and install latest version, click here to download Smart Switch.
- Connect your Galaxy smartphone to your computer with its USB cable.
- Tap ‘ALLOW’ on your Galaxy smartphone.
- Click ‘More’ on Smart Switch screen on the computer.
- Click ‘Preferences’.
- Select ‘Encrypt backup data’ and click ‘OK’.
- Click ‘CONFIRM’.
- Click ‘Backup’, create a PIN to encrypt your data.
- Wait for your Galaxy smartphone to backup.
For Windows phone
If you have old windows mobile then you can transfer data to new Samsung only with wireless.
- Open the Windows store on your Windows device to download the Smart Switch app and get started.
- Search ‘Samsung Smart Switch’ to find the app and download it.
- Read and approve the disclaimer by tapping on the check mark to continue. Follow the prompts to establish a connection with your new Galaxy phone.
- Open the Smart Switch app on your new Galaxy device. Select ‘Wireless’ transfer method. Select ‘Receive’ option to continue.
- Select ‘Windows Phone’ option to continue with content items transfer.
- Scroll down and note the network name and password of your new Galaxy device. You will need this information in the next step. Note that your network name and password will be different from the one shown here.
- On your Windows device, access your Wi-Fi settings and select the available network from your new Galaxy device. Tap the network name on the Windows device and enter the password specified on your new Galaxy device.
- Once the connection to your Galaxy device is made, on your old Windows device select the content you want to transfer.
- On your new Galaxy device, tap ‘Receive’ to begin the content items transfer.
- On your new Galaxy device, review the content items that have been transferred successfully from your Windows device.
